German designer Melitta Baumeister follows her first run with the Swoosh by taking apart one of Nike's strangest shoes, and the Women's Air Rift Rocker is the result. The Air Rift arrived in 1996 with a split toe and a midfoot strap, drawn from the barefoot running of Kenyan athletes, and Baumeister keeps those bones while rebuilding everything around them.
The upper is smooth olive-brown leather, broken up by a mesh panel at the midfoot and a matching stretch collar. A wide hook-and-loop strap crosses the laces, with a pull tab at the heel. Underneath sits the headline: a thick, sculpted rocker sole in the same muted brown, curving up at the toe and heel, with a pale sand outsole and a small Swoosh pressed into the side.
The Melitta Baumeister x Nike Women's Air Rift Rocker is expected to release on November 12th at 15:00 UTC for $220 through Nike and select retailers.
